At least sexist advertising is a little more subtle now...

I started using Google Alerts for Advertising blogs, and found this lovely blog. It's an interesting collection of print ads from the past that are so blatantly sexist that you hope they are just a joke, but these are real published ads. The one I particularly have a problem with is the ad for Tipalet cigarettes- "Blow in her face and she'll follow you anywhere." Really? I'm glad we have moved in a better direction, because I don't think anyone should be following that man.

  2. Thanks for the link to Dr. Reichert's blog! I took his Intro to Advertising class last fall, and it made me decide to declare an Advertising major.

  4. wow. those are horrible! I especially hated the one where a woman was a tiger skinned rug with the man stepping on her head! Not so subliminal sexism.

  5. Good post! I have seen a lot of these before in my Women's Studies class. The Lysol one is particularly unbelievable. Advertisements were definitely less subtle back then, but a lot of those ideas about men and women are still present in today's advertising. They may be a lot less overt, but that doesn't make them any less harmful. Things have gotten better, but it is still so important to think critically about the images we see on a daily basis and question what they are really saying about people.

  7. Ohmygod lol. So, no offense to the cigarette companies, but I would never follow a man anywhere if he blew smoke in my face...I'd probably blow it back at him!
